Facts, Films and Feelings

About Space

In our game about space, we tried to solve the problem of Boredom in space. Boredom is a big problem in space and it can cause health problems. The Dream Makers decided that boredom is a big enough problem that we needed to come up with a solution to help the crew members of the space station combat the problem of boredom.  In our game, Facts Films and Feelings about Space. We have made a trivia game that has questions about space facts, space films (Star Wars) and questions about feelings that the astronauts have to help them get to know each other better.

Why a Game?

The effects of boredom on mental health...

November 2018

"Boredom can be awful," said a researcher from Psychology Today.  Boredom is what happens when someone finds their life uninteresting and without a purpose. Boredom can lead to many mental health problems including schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, paranoia, anhedonia (the inability to feel pleasure) , other different bad conditions that can occur. Boredom has a lot to do with how individuals perceive things. Someone may find something boring and someone else may find it interesting. The Dream Makers have a solution for boredom in space. A board game that asks questions the astronauts will probably find interesting, space itself, films about space (Star Wars) and it also asks questions about the astronauts themselves. The answers to the feelings questions may change from day to day, depending on the astronauts moods.

Boredom in space...

November 2018

Boredom in space may not seem like a big problem but it could be the biggest threat to a mission in space for an astronaut.  Boredom in space can lead to depression which may effect their basic safety procedures, effect their attention spans, and subconsciously take more risks to alleviate their boredom. A study says that astronauts may not have enough to do and will just fill their time sleeping. Astronauts will find themselves in a cramped area for many months with limited things to be able to do. The Dream Makers think that this type of an environment would make it a place to be able to play a board game with each other. Our game will challenge their memory skills and make them think about how they are truly feeling on each day. It will give the astronauts a chance to talk to each other about things that may help them deal with the stressfulness of being in outer space.

How our game can help solve the problem of boredom in space...

November 2018

The Dream Makers researched the idea of making a board game to solve the problem of boredom in space. We found out that playing board games are actually good for your brain! Our research showed us that some people actually got smarter by playing board games! An advantage to making a fun board game to solve the problem of boredom is that you can play a board game over and over again and each time you play, it will be slightly different.  The questions that we designed for our board game are fun and engaging. We also included questions that will force the astronauts to talk about their feelings  as well as challenge each other with hard space fact questions and fun space film questions. During the scrimmage we also got some great advice from the project judge. She helped us realize that our original idea of origami game pieces would float away in space so we made a magnetized board and a spinner instead so that would not lose our dice in space.

How to play the Facts, Films and Feelings Game...

The Dream Makers decided that our game needed to be the type of game that would change so that the astronauts wouldn't get bored playing our game. We chose some questions about space films (Star Wars), questions about space fact (they are hard) and questions about their own feelings that they have. We want the astronauts to be challenged by the facts and films questions but have a chance to share their feelings with each other so they can get to know each other on a more personal level.

Rules:

  1. Soon the spinner to see who goes first. (highest number goes first).
  2. Spin and move your character. If you land on a purple space you have to answer a space fact question. Navy blue a space film question. Teal blue a feelings question.
  3. If you answer correctly you roll again and can try to answer a new question. The feelings questions actually make you take a new card after giving high five or a pat on the back to the other player.
  4. First one to the end is the winner.
